My Memories of Pla Mor – By Donna Holka
“My first memories of going to the Pla Mor was with girl friends and getting on the bus at 10th and O St. – and after the dance, riding the bus back to 10th and O St. In the early days, it was called ‘stag’ night.
Eventually, Charles Holka, a nice young man, a good dancer, asked to take me back to my house — I didn’t have to ride the bus again. This was the beginning of our courtship — Spring 1948. We were married December 1949.
We Celebrated our 25th, 40th and 50th wedding anniversaries at the Pla Mor. So many family members and friends honored us with their presence on these occasions. The staff was always so helpful with the organizing of these celebrations – including the food and dance bands.
When Lawrence Welk and his band were there, I got to dance with Myron Floren. We danced to so many great bands and met and made so many good friends over the years — so many are gone now. Saturday dance nights 9 to 1 am.
We have always been a Gold Card member and we have a piece of the old wood floor dated 1929. Table 5 is our favorite table. So many stories to tell.
Charles Passed away June 18th 2010 – and he would have been so pleased and honored that Bobby Layne and the Pla Mor staff attended his service.
The Pla Mor is still a part of my life — so many wonderful memories — and good times ahead — I’m sure.”
